Note: Felt is a textile product made by pressing wool or acrylic fibers together. Some felt are incredibly soft and flexible, while others are tough, durable, and strong enough to be used as building materials. I use 2mm thick acrylic felt for most of my felt projects. I did not experience shrinkage and elongation problems when washing, but this can be a problem with some soft felts due to their structure.

Materials Required for Sewing Felt Potatoes
- Wool Blend Felt – Yellow and light brown tones are suitable.
- Embroidery Thread — Felts and similar colors of yellow and brown are suitable.
- Polyester Fiber Filling
Tip: I use sewing needles as thin as possible when sewing felt toys or vegetables. When you use a thin sewing needle when sewing felt, the points where the needles go are not very obvious and sewing felt is much easier.
How to Make Felt Potatoes?
- Print your chosen felt potato pattern on the printer.
- Place the felt potato pattern on the felt and cut the felts according to the pattern.
- Fix the two felt pieces you cut together with the help of a needle so that they do not slip while sewing.
- Start sewing the felt potato using a sliding stitch.
- Before finishing the side seams, sew roughly 4/5 of the perimeter of the potato to turn the felt potato inside out and fill it comfortably with fiber, leaving a small seam area.
- Turn the felt potato inside out.
- Fill the gap you left with fiber and sew the hole after filling.
- Create potato spots and dimples by inserting the needle through the side seams. The simplest way for a natural look is by sewing and tying multiple strands of brown embroidery thread through the center of the potato.
To add more personality, use a marker to add pigment to the felt near where you will place the eyes before adding the eyes. This shading adds realism to the finished felt potato and is one of my favorite techniques for making felt food.
Your felt potatoes are ready to play! Felt potatoes are fun and versatile; they can be baked in play ovens, baked in tins, or mashed with toy potato mashers. Like in real kitchens, potatoes are a must in imaginary play kitchens!
