How to Make Handmade Felt Star Christmas Decorations?

You can make stunning felt star ornaments with a few inexpensive and readily available materials. You can quickly sew your felt star ornament by following the instructions below.

Let’s get started making your fun DIY felt ornaments.

  1. Draw a Star. Draw two stars on the felt. Start by drawing a five-pointed star on felt with a washable pen or marker. The star can be any size you want. If you need to improve your drawing, you can print any star pattern or a small star image and draw it on felt. Don’t worry if your star could be better. This adds to the charm of a handmade ornament.
  2. Cut Out Felt Stars. Cut out felt star shapes. Each ornament will require two stars. Using craft scissors, carefully cut out felt shapes.
  3. Draw a Design on the Star. Draw the design to be sewn on a star. Then use a pencil or fabric marker to draw a pattern to be sewn onto a star. I drew two lines within the star. You can also draw a snowflake within the star; feel free to be creative. You can create a name or initials, polka dots, stripes, or whatever you want! Making a few ornaments with a letter on each star would be fun. Then you can hang it like a wreath to spell out a word or name.
  4. Stitching Design. Prepare the needle and thread. Now thread a needle with a thread of the color of your choice. Then sew along the pattern you drew on the star. A backstitch works well for this project, but it’s an excellent opportunity to practice a variety of stitches. Sew on until your pattern is finished. Tie a knot with the needle and thread at the back of the felt. Cut off any excess thread with scissors.
  5. Add Decorations. Determine your sewing design. I didn’t add any designs. But you can use seed beads to add sparkle to your embellishment to make the felt star ornament more beautiful and exciting. Sew the beads into your design where you want them with a needle and thread. Then pull your needle and thread back into the felt and tie a knot. Cut the thread.
  6. Merge the Stars. Are you satisfied with your final design? Extraordinary! Match the dots on your decorated star, and the other felt star cutout.
  7. Blanket Stitch Around the Stars. Use a blanket stitch to start sewing the stars together. When you reach the top point, pause for the next step.
  8. Create a Ribbon Loop. Fold a 2-inch length of satin ribbon in half. Then, place the open ends between the felt stars at the top of a dot. Continue sewing along the stars’ circumference and the ribbon to hold it in place.
  9. Fill It Up. Continue sewing around the star shapes, leaving an opening to fill the star. You can use silicone padding or conventional cotton for the stuffing. Still, you can cut your felt scraps into small pieces to avoid buying another material you already have. Now insert the leftover felt pieces or padding material into the opening between the felt star shapes: the more scraps, the thicker or fluffy the ornament. Use as much as you want.
  10. Blanket Stitch to Close. Then, the blanket stitch around the rest of the star. Tie a knot in the thread, then pull the needle and thread it through the top star to catch the knot in the center of the ornament. Pass the thread through and cut it.

Finally, your handmade felt star Christmas decorations are complete! The felt star ornament will make a lovely addition to your holiday decor or beautiful gifts. Get creative with colors and designs to make the DIY felt star ornament project truly yours.
